Edible Art!

Oct 19, 2011 at 3:00pm by Elise Copps-Smith

GgQZR59XVhEkRJszxCrEdAmt.jpeg:Amazon:photoFood as art is becoming a popular phenomenon. These days, both chefs and amateurs are turning everyday ingredients into sculptures so spectacular that you can hardly believe they started as everyday food. With fall fairs in full swing, incredible butter statues are easy to find, but if you search a bit further, you can discover all kinds of edible sculptures.

Not too long ago, I watched a documentary called Kings of Pastry that follows elite pastry chefs as they prepare to partake in the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition. Each chef in the competition must create an intricate showpiece from sugar and chocolate. These master chefs can blow sugar like it's glass, and sculpt chocolate like it's clay.

G40ALiCWUcW6Aj31br1SEb6E.jpeg:Amazon:photoI was so intrigued by their artistry that I decided to give food sculpting a go. I started out with something a little more my speed, and moulded some candy decorations out of marshmallow fondant. The process may look easy, but I've gained a new appreciation for the sky-high price tags on wedding cakes. Sculpting sugar is no easy feat!

What are your thoughts on edible art? Should food be about flavour or fashion? If you have your own sculptures to share, post your photos below!

      Wow!!!

      Angela, love your wedding cake.

Cindy, neat cupcakes, you can drop them in my trick or treat bag!

Sandi, the rose and the candy jewellery are awesome!

I have attempted to try the food art thing, but I always come out looking like a preschooler had done my work. No on second thought some preschoolers do a much better job than I do!

      Thank you for sharing everyone!

Sandi, I am in awe! Both pieces are so realistic!! I would love to learn to work with sugar like that.

When it comes to cakes, I have a hard time deciding between fashion and flavour. I hate the taste of fondant, but it just looks so smooth and pretty. I guess I have several years to decide which direction to take for my wedding cake. Who knows, maybe by then they will have developed a way to make fondant taste better.

All these pictures are so inspiring!!!!!!! This would be a very fun project to attempt at our house. I've always gone for flavour and less for fashion, but it's so much better when you can achieve both (great cake, Angela!).

Those little treats are so cute, Elise, that would be a fun place to start trying my hand at edible art :)
